When young people learn about the internet, most discover something fun, educational and exciting. Sadly, a few discover cyberbullying.
A recent report on the BBC’s Click programme quotes Parry Aftab from WiredSafety.org (a site that specialises in advice for and about young people online):
“Cyber-bullying is when one child or teen targets another for embarrassment, humiliation, fear, blackmail. Something designed to hurt the other using an interactive technology,”
You teach children to cross the road safely and to ride a bike without falling off. It’s the same online. Children need guidance and support when they use the internet.
Read GetSafeOnline.org’s advice: Protect children from online threats. We also have advice and links specifically for young people themselves: Young people: safe online.
