According to a report in MIT Technology Review, researchers from Indiana University and Symantec, an antivirus company have found a potential problem with the routers that millions of people around the world use to connect to the internet.
The problem comes about because most people don’t change the default password on their router – the device that connects a computer to a broadband or ADSL internet connection. This allows hackers to change their settings so that when you enter a legitimate website address the router takes you to a criminal fake website. You enter your password and, say, bank account details and, well, game over.
The problem is that router manufacturers want their products to be easy to use and often don’t force buyers to set a new, secure password.
Every system has a different procedure so I can’t give you detailed step by step instructions. However, it won’t be difficult or time-consuming. So, dig out your router manual or go to the manufacturer’s website and follow the instructions on how to change the password.
